Sound familiar?
You've done the saving. The planning tools haven't kept up.
Most tools stop at a savings rate and a 4% rule. Here is where that breaks.
Problem 01
“My spending's in one app, my net worth in another, my plan in a spreadsheet, and they never agree.”
Three tools, three versions of the truth, and an evening of copy-paste for every answer. FlameFolio puts your accounts and your plan in one place: the plan starts from your real balances, and every month it checks what you actually spent and saved against it.
Your money and your plan, finally in one place
September check-up
| Line | Plan | Actual | Diff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spending | $7,000 | $6,420 | −$580 |
| Saved | $3,500 | $3,910 | +$410 |
| Brokerage | $412,000 | $405,300 | −$6,700 |
| 401(k)s | $688,000 | $694,150 | +$6,150 |
Problem 02
“My planner says I'll pay $31,000 in tax at 62. I have no idea how it got there.”
Most tools hand you one tax number per year and ask you to trust it. FlameFolio lays out every year like a tax return: income, deductions, each bracket and the room left in it, state and local tax, the ACA credit, Medicare surcharges. Change one thing and see everything it touches.
Every year's taxes, line by line, so you can check the math
2026 · age 57
taxable $84,100
- Federal income tax$9,596
- State income tax (CO)$3,700
- ACA premium credit−$7,240
- Medicare surcharge$0
Federal brackets
$16,700 of room left in the 12% bracket this year.
Problem 03
“The 4% rule was built for 30-year retirements. Mine could be 45.”
A bad market in your first few years hurts far more than one later, and an average return hides that. FlameFolio runs your actual plan through every market since 1871, then tests what helps most: retiring later, spending less, claiming Social Security later, or changing your mix.
Your real plan, tested against market history
Stress test
Sample: $2.4M at 55, spending $125k a year, 60/40
Changes that would raise it, one at a time
- Spend $10,000 less a year87% +16
- Spend 10% less when markets are down85% +14
- Move to 80/20 stocks/bonds78% +7
- Method:
- each line is one year you could have retired in, replayed with the real returns that followed. The app adds Monte Carlo runs built from the same history.
- Guardrail:
- spend 10% less in any year savings sit below 80% of where they started. In the app you set your own steps and which spending gets cut.
Problem 04
“I can't tell whether Roth conversions beat paying the tax later.”
It depends on your tax rate now versus once required withdrawals (RMDs) start, your state, ACA and Medicare side effects, and your heirs. FlameFolio runs conversion strategies through your whole plan and shows each one's lifetime tax, side by side.
Roth conversion strategies, compared on your plan
Roth conversions
| Strategy | Lifetime tax | vs none |
|---|---|---|
| No conversions | $612k | — |
| Fill the 12% bracket | $571k | −$41k |
| Fill the 22% bracket | $548k | −$64k |
| Fill 22%, IRMAA-capped | $553k | −$59k |
Problem 05
“Every planner I try is either a toy or a cockpit.”
Simple tools hide the math you want to check. Advanced ones bury you in inputs before you see a result. FlameFolio has three views of one plan: Basic for the big picture, Intermediate for the levers, Advanced for every tax line. Start simple, go deeper when you're ready.
One plan, three levels of detail. Switch any time.

What If
Turn a dial and watch the whole plan answer: retirement age, spending, returns and more.
Simplified sample: no taxes. The real What If runs your full plan.
The traps nobody warns you about.
Three rules that quietly cost early retirees thousands a year. Slide past the line and watch. FlameFolio tracks every one of them, every year of your plan.
The ACA cliff
Retire before 65 and your health subsidy depends on income. One dollar past 400% of the poverty line and all of it is gone.
$600 more income and you'd lose a $17,974 subsidy.
Sample couple, both 60, 2026 rules.
Medicare surcharges
Medicare premiums jump in steps with income, and they're set on your income from two years earlier. A big year at 63 shows up in the bill at 65.
$3,001 more and it rises to $2,297 a year.
Married couple, both on Medicare, 2026 lines.
The RMD tax bomb
The IRS makes you withdraw from 401(k)s and IRAs every year, whether you need the money or not, and the share grows with age.

Questions people ask
How is this different from ProjectionLab or Boldin?
FlameFolio is a money tracker and a retirement planner in one, so your plan starts from your real balances and checks itself against what actually happens. Every year's taxes are laid out line by line so you can check the math, and the stress test shows which changes would fix a plan that falls short, not just the odds.
Do I have to link my bank accounts?
No. The free plan runs on numbers you type in. Linking is there when you want your plan to follow your real balances, and you can unlink at any time.
Which accounts can I link?
Banks, credit cards and brokerages through Plaid or SimpleFIN, plus crypto wallets and exchanges. Anything else, like a pension or a house, you can add by hand.
Is it US only?
For now, yes. Taxes, accounts and Social Security follow US rules: federal, all 50 states plus DC, and city and county taxes where they apply.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your data is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, using a key derived from your own password (PBKDF2-SHA256, 600,000 rounds). Bank connections are encrypted the same way, and you can delete your account and everything in it at any time.
Why is Pro billed yearly?
A retirement plan is a yearly rhythm: new tax figures, a new year of results to check against the plan. Pro is priced for that, and founding members keep their price for as long as they stay.
How accurate are the taxes?
Each year is worked out from the actual rules: federal brackets and deductions, your state and local taxes, the ACA credit, Medicare surcharges and required withdrawals. The figures are updated every year as the IRS and states publish them.
Is this financial advice?
No. FlameFolio is a planning tool: it shows what your plan does under the assumptions you choose. It doesn't move money or recommend products, and it doesn't replace a tax professional or advisor.
Do you sell coaching or advisor sessions?
Not today. FlameFolio gives you the tools and the numbers, and you make the calls. Some planning apps are built to funnel you toward advisor packages that cost thousands of dollars. If we ever add sessions with a person, they'll be a small, optional add-on. The app already does most of the work, so the price will reflect that.
